Libraries Offer Monthly Hands-On Computer & Technology Classes

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Adult Services staff present a variety of free, introductory computer classes each month. The classes consist of a hands-on introduction to basic skills for people who would like to learn more about using these computer and technology programs.

The classes take place in the Computer Labs of the libraries; seating is limited, and reservations are required. To register online, click on the links below. Participants may also register by calling the branch libraries. The schedule for May is as follows:


George Memorial Library, Richmond

  • eReader Q&A – Mondays, May 6 and 20, 2:00-4:00 pm, Adult Services Learning Lab. Registration is not required for this come-and-go session.
  • Computers 101 – Tuesday, May 7, 10:00 am-12:00 noon. This class presents a basic, hands-on introduction to using computers. Click here to register.
  • Typing for Beginners – Monday, May 13, 10:00-11:00 am. Learn how to use a self-paced typing tutorial on a computer keyboard. Get tips on increasing typing speed and accuracy. Click here to register.

  • Computers 101 – Monday, May 20, 6:00 pm. This class presents a basic, hands-on introduction to using computers and a mouse. It will also offer tips to improve typing skills. Click here to register.

 

Missouri City Branch Library

  • Introduction to Microsoft Edge – Monday, May 6, 7:00-8:00 pm. Learn the basics of navigating the World Wide Web with the Microsoft Edge browser, which replaced the Internet Explorer browser. Discover new features that are available with the updated browser. Get tips on how to use a web browser, access settings, bookmark a webpage, and more! Click here to register.
  • Introduction to 3D Printing: Bag Clip – Wednesday, May 8, 10:30 am-12:00 noon, Computer Lab. Library staff will introduce the 3D printer, demonstrate how to create a bag clip, and explain how library patrons can print their own designs. Designs created in this class will be printed and available for pickup later in the week. Those attending the session will also learn about free websites that can be used to find 3D files or to create their own 3D designs.   • Email 101: Customizing Gmail – Monday, May 20, 7:00-8:00 pm. Learn how to set up a free email account on the Internet using Google Mail. The class will also cover basic email functions, including creating, forwarding, replying to, and adding attachments to emails.   • Accessing Consumer Reports Online – Tuesday, May 7, 2:00-3:00 pm. Learn how to access Consumer Reports online 24/7, using FBCL databases and a library card. Get tips on how to search for articles from this helpful publication. Click here to register.
  • 3D Printing: Pencil Holder/Desk Organizer – Tuesday, May 21, 2:00-3:00 pm. Library staff will introduce the 3D printer and explain how library patrons can print their own designs. This class will focus on creating a pencil holder or desk organizer. Designs created in this class will be printed and available for pickup later in the week. Those attending the session will also learn about free websites that can be used to find 3D files or to create their own 3D designs.   • Bring Your Own Device Q&A – Tuesday, May 28, 2:00-3:00 pm, Conference Room 2A. Patrons can bring their mobile reading devices (Kindle, iPad, tablet, or smartphone) and have their questions answered about the device, about downloading ebooks, or about streaming movies. Learn how easy it is to check out free ebooks, e-audiobooks, music, and movies from the library’s online digital collections, OverDrive and Hoopla. Registration is not required for this come-and-go clinic.
